"When you're working on your body, you're also working with the mind."
--Michael Stone, Toronto-based yoga instructor and psychotherapist
In a recent article, Michael Stone points out that "yoga can reach five layers of the body: gross body (muscles and bones), subtle body (respiratory and nervous), emotional body, intellectual body, and finally, ananda, which translates to bliss.
Anyone who practices yoga experiences this mind-body connection on the mat. I know I sure do. Since beginning my yoga practice I now notice how my body posture often reflects my feelings. In fact, I often use my body to change my emotional state. The mind-body connection is indeed powerful.
Stone, who ran both a yoga studio and psychotherapy practice, sees yoga as more of a "route to inner vision" rather than a physical workout. Bravo! Sure, I like the physical benefits of yoga, but I like the mental and emotional ones even more.

Next time you go to the mat thinking about achieving tighter buns, consider looking at your practice as more than exercise for your body.
Namaste!
