June is fast approaching and it's shaping up to be a month chock full of yoga. Maybe it's the warmer weather or the start of summer or the solstice, but June seems to be the chosen month of lots of fun yoga and yoga-related events. Here's a taste of what's going on:
- The whole month of June -- Karma Krew's Peace by Peace Nationwide Yogathon. It doesn't get any better than fundraising via yoga practice, does it? Participating is simple -- you set a goal for the number of times you'll practice yoga during the month of June and invite family and friends to pledge a small dollar amount for every class you take. The registration deadline is May 29, so don't wait. It's the perfect opportunity to revive your yoga practice and raise money for a good cause.
- June 6-11 -- The NY Yoga and Raw Food Expo. The Hotel New Yorker is home to the third annual Yoga and Raw Food Expo. This year's presenters include Dharma Mittra, Dashama, and Charles Muir. Click here to see a listing of events. Special events include a live kirtan on Saturday night. If you can't make it to the expo, the workshops and lectures will be available online for download.
- June 6 -- Yogapalooza 2010 -- Everyone can get in on the Yogapalooza fun, as there are events in Los Angeles, NYC, San Diego, San Francisco and online. This YogaBear fundrasier, which is held on National Cancer Survivor's Day, raises money for free yoga services for cancer patients and survivors.
- June 9 -- Spiritual Nutrition with Dr. Gabriel Cousens. Dr. Cousens, author of the book Conscious Eating, is hosting a 2-hour workshop at Kaia Yoga Complete Wellness Centers in Westport, CT. Learn how an organic, vegan, low-glycemic, high-mineral, live-food diet can enhance your yoga practice, and how your yoga practice can enhance your meditation. Dr. Cousens will discuss how your dietary choices impact all the koshas, the nadis, and the chakras as well as the connection between diet and the yamas and niyamas. The workshop costs $35 if you pre-register and costs $45 at the door. Contact Kaia Yoga for more information -- info@kaiayoga.com
- June 17-20 -- BuddhaFest -- This Washington, DC-based event features 4 days of inspiring films, talks, and meditation. Speakers include Tara Brach, Lama Surya Das, and Sharon Salzberg. The dozen films shown present a wide-angle view of Buddhism in contemporary life. Click here for a complete schedule of events. Seating is limited, so you might want to secure your tickets ASAP. Six-even passes start at $49.75, with single event tickets priced at $9.95.
- June 21 -- Solstice in Times Square -- It's an annual NYC tradition -- yogis unfurl their yoga mats in the middle of Times Square and manage to find peace amid the chaos. Admission is free and pre-registration is now open.
How's that for a great month of yoga? Fun events, the opportunity to raise money for good causes, and lots and lots of yoga -- I can't think of a better way to kick of the summer!
Namaste!

I discovered a movie based on the life of Adi Shankaracharya a few days ago.
Set in ancient times, the movie follows the life of Sankara - the founder of the non-duality (Advaita) school of Indian philosophy and one of the oldest meditation traditions.
I think it's the first and only Indian movie to be made in Sanskrit.
Liked it so much, I added it to A Yoga Notebook.
It's about 2 1/2 hours long and I thought I'd watch it over a few sittings. But it was so good, I spent the evening entranced.

re: Is There a "Right" Yoga?
Don Stapleton writes in Self-Awakening Yoga . . .
Although learning traditional yoga postures provides a vocabulary for movement, it is all too easy to substitute the learned forms for the subtler and less defined, yet richer protean dimensions of awakened creativity.
I have posted a longer excerpt at . . .
