I did a lot of Spring Cleaning this year -- and I don't necessarily mean house cleaning (although I did some of that, too). As we head towards summer I'm thinking about doing more of the same. Seasonal changes are a great prompt to make changes in your life right along with Mother Nature.
So let's start with your yoga practice -- what needs to be cleaned up/detoxed? Do you need to change teachers or yoga studios or the type of yoga you're practicing? Or do you need to change your belief around how much time you have to devote to your yoga practice? Or maybe you need to clean up your yoga space or your yoga accessories (any old yoga clothes you aren't wearing or yoga mats you aren't using?). Or maybe you simply need to switch things up for the summer -- perhaps your body is craving something more vigorous or a slower pace or a longer or shorter practice? Does the idea of introducing something new to your yoga practice appeal to you right now? Maybe it's adding in chanting or meditation or pranayama?
You can do the same with your life -- do you want to let go of things (time spent on the computer, negative thoughts, TV time, piles on your desk, clothes that no longer suit you, etc.) or even some people in your life (perhaps you want to reduce your time with the friend that complains all the time or you want to let go of a friendship that is no longer feeling right or nourishing to you)? Do you want to let go of bad habits or patterns that are holding you back from where you want to be? Or maybe you simply want to let go of your Winter/Spring mentality and think about getting outdoors more or taking a vacation or starting a new venture or taking more downtime.
Consider this a seasonal audit of sorts, or an opportunity to look at your life and consider what's working and what's not. It's a change to make things more conscious.
On a personal front, I'm changing up my diet (I tend to eat lighter foods in the summer and I up my water intake), my daily practice (I'm adding a practice and modifying another practice), how I manage my time and the people I'm sharing my life with. Granted, you don't have to do it all at once -- you can start with something small and build up over time or you can pick a certain number of things that doesn't trip your overwhelm wire.
And for those of you looking for an actual Spring Detox (after all, there are still a few weeks left till summer), check out this video, which offers up a healthy juice recipe and a short but effective yoga practice:
